How to Make Magnesium Water

Magnesium water is a highly bio-available form of magnesium supplement - magnesium bicarbonate. It is cheap to make but does require a bit of effort. This is what you need:

  • 1 litre of chilled sparking water. This can either be store bought or you can use a sodastream and filtered water. This is a preferable and ultimately cheaper option.
  • Magnesium Hydroxide Powder (food grade).

Add one teaspoon of the magnesium hydrdoxide powder to the sparking water and put the lid back on the bottle. Shake the bottle well. The powder will be in suspension in the liquid. Shake occasionally for 15 minutes to an hour and eventually the liquid will become mostly clear with a little residue in the bottom. The bubbles will have disappeared. If you have made this in a soft plastic bottle you will see the sides of the bottle suck in as the chemical process takes place. Once the water is clear, you now have magnesium bicarbonate that you can add to your smoothies or half and half with a glass of chilled water or any other beverage. I find it quite palatable. You can transfer it to another container now, preferably glass and keep it chilled in the fridge, discard the residue at the bottom of the bottle.

I have been unable to find much information which discusses dosages. I have seen variations from 200 ml to 1 litre a day! The best idea is to start small, see how it makes you feel and your bowels are likely to tell you. Don't drink it straight as this is likely to cause a stomach upset.

I have not yet found a New Zealand based source of the Magnesium Hydroxide Powder, but it can be bought from Australia from the Supporting Balance website (where I have bought mine) and is also available from Amazon
